The weekend of June 22, 2024 found our track crew working on Phase 2 of our Van Sickle junction rebuild project.
This was the first project that we scheduled for night time work, in an effort to avoid the daytime heat here in Florida. With some good worklights, the project came together well and it was definitely much more comfortable!
This portion of the project entails realigning the A1, A2, and A3 tracks as well as the yard ladder on the east end of the yard. Much of this track was some of the first installed on this property in the 1990s. Next week we will complete the project with the ladder track replacement and the last two new switches to be installed.
Starting late Friday afternoon: From the left, Tracks A1, A2, and A3 have been removed. (A1 removal started further back, as most of that track had already been replaced in 2022)New end of A1 track in place Friday evening.Installing new clay sub-roadbed where the new crossover from A1 to A2 will be installed.Anywhere we’re not reinstalling track on an existing roadbed, a clay base is installed first.Cutting in the new A1-A2 switchReplacement of A2 leading into the new switch from A1Dave and Dylan tag-teaming a track joint. The new A1-A2 switch, and the new A2 track as it leads into A3New A1, A2, and A3 in placeLooking back into the yard, with the first ballast laid on the new tracks, and one of the two additional switches to be installed next week. (The switch on the right is just staged there during construction – it’s not where it will be installed)Next week, the project will be completed by replacing and realigning the ladder track, and connecting the tracks we replaced this week into the new ladder.
